Deloitte India and Deloitte
MA1, in association with Indian Merchants' Chambers ('IMC') and Federation of
Indo-Israel Chambers of Commerce ('FIICC') and with the support of The Sheriff
of Mumbai, organized the “1st
Physical Risk Management Conference” on February 17, 2009 at Hotel Trident.
This was followed by the “1st Physical Risk Management
Workshop” at IMC on February 18, 2009.
The objective of the events was
to share practices followed in Israel to combat terrorist attacks and to
discuss how steps taken by different agencies like Government, Military,
business houses and civilians have helped build a resilient Israel. The follow-up
Workshop covered more practical aspects of security, like sharing views on
various possible emergency responses in event of an attack.
The Conference was attended
by over 100 participants, consisting of senior executives from a diverse array
of industries indicating the seriousness being attached to this subject in the
corporate world. The audience found
itself engaged in a very intense debate over the current state of Physical
Security in the country and made a significant contribution to the discussion.
Top level veterans of the
Israeli Security Agencies ('ISA') and Special Forces Units of Israel Defense
Force ('IDF'), presently Partner of Deloitte MA1, Israel viz. Mr. Amikam Azoulay, Former Head
Commander, Anti-Terror Security School of ISA presently) and Mr. Eli Racin, Security Officer, ISA
Veteran Commander of IDF Special Forces shared their experiences and interacted
with the Indian experts on the strategies needed for India's physical security
landscape. This was followed by a Panel Discussion, where the audience
shared their opinions on a Public Private Partnership that could lead to a more
resilient India.
Other speakers included Mr. Jayant Umranikar, Additional Director
General of Police, Maharashtra; Dr. (Mrs.) Indu Shahani, Sheriff of Mumbai; Mr.
Nitin Khanapurkar, Senior Director, Deloitte and Office-bearer, Business
Continuity Institute, UK; Mr. Vijay Mukhi, IT expert and Member of the Security
Council, Maharashtra; and Mr. Gul Kripalani, President, FIICC.
The Workshop held on the
following day at IMC was attended by over 50 security professionals. The
speakers for the Workshop were Mr. Amikam Azoulay, Mr. Eli Racin and Mr. Vijay
Mukhi. The group discussed various
crisis scenarios like a hostage situation, a terror attack etc. Audience was split into sub-groups to
determine their approach towards such situations. The session concluded with the speakers
discussing the role of Chief Security Officer at organizations.
